Dear Friends,

This week had two events that really inspired my family, the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk and the 2007 “Walk 4 Autism."

The Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk® is held annually to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research. Jean and Steve Bachhuber are strong supporters of the Association and invited my family and I to be a part of their walking team. Jean’s team, the Mighty Oaks, won for the most number of walkers and the most funds raised. I was honored to walk with so many friends and advocates, all working to fight Alzheimer’s. It was good to see my friend and County Board Supervisor Paul Rusk, the Executive Director of the South Central Wisconsin Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. Great Job to Paul, Jean, the enthusiastic DJ, and the team of dedicated staff and volunteers that helped make this important event a success. Alzheimer's touches all of us, whether through a friend, family member, or neighbor. While we fight for a cure, we must do all that we can to ensure that families have the resources to help themselves and their loved ones.

The Sargent family also participated in the 2007 “Walk 4 Autism” at Warner Park last weekend. I enjoyed seeing some old friends at this event too. Karen and John Sauer coordinate this wonderful event that is designed to embrace families and allow all to participate. Karen and I spoke briefly about our belief that more needs to be done to help families detect autism earlier and get the vital, effective early treatment to those that need it. The lives of children with autism can be greatly enhanced when we provide early resources.

We also enjoyed Applefest on the north side of Madison. There was great local entertainment, friends and neighbors, an amazingly tempting bake sale, and activities for all ages. Activities like this are important to attend and nurture. They help strengthen our families and communities. It's also a great opportunity to find out more about the resources we have here.

This week also featured a school open house. It's great to be able to visit with parents, children, and teachers. I served at the Gompers PTO table, helping to get more parents involved in strengthening our schools. Investing in our education system is important to ensure that our children will have the learning opportunities they need to succeed.
