Week of March 31st, 2008

Dear Friends,

This week’s election gave me the opportunity to get out and support a number of County Board candidates. Election results included the failure of a referendum to fund the financially strapped Wisconsin Heights School District. The rejection of funding stresses the need for the legislature to revisit education funding. Our youth will best succeed if we fully support educational opportunities.

A final thought from election day: elections should be about real issues, not attack ads and outrageously slanderous accusations. Whether it’s a County Board Supervisor race or a Supreme Court election, we need to recapture Wisconsin’s honest, fair elections.

Now I’m back to going door-to-door for my own campaign. I welcome any of you who want to walk with me.

Also this past week I continued my outreach effort by attending a number of fundraisers and meetings with opinion leaders from the 81st district. Keep those ideas and contacts coming!

On a sadder note, this week marked a significant loss for Wisconsin. I had been looking forward to meeting with former East High School Principal and Regent Milt McPike, who lived in Mazomanie. His experience with education made him a great resource for public education advocates like myself. I think that Melissa and I believed that someone of his indomitable spirit would be able to shake off even the most insidious cancer. Our family joined the hundreds and hundreds of others that filled East High School’s Fieldhouse for a final visitation in honor of this remarkable man. His family was gracious to share this goodbye with so many whom Milt touched.
