Late June, 2008

Dear Friends,

Here is a brief update from the campaign trail. I appreciate your support, enthusiasm, and interest!

In Brief:

An important campaign finance deadline is just days away, we need your donation and support today! Prominent endorsements continue, Sheriffs Mahoney & Spoden endorse Sargent for Assembly. And an informal poll shows that Wisconsin Dairy Cows favor Sargent for Assembly.

The Details:

I’m proud to announce that I have received the endorsement of Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney and Rock County Sheriff Bob Spoden. The Sheriffs join Dane County Board Supervisor Dorothy Wheeler, Madison City Alder Michael Schumacher, former Madison Mayor Paul Soglin, Madison School Board member Marjorie Passman, and former Madison School Board member Carol Carstensen in supporting my bid for State Assembly. The press release can be viewed under the "Press Releases" button in the column to the left.

In the past week or so I assisted with our annual PTO teacher appreciation lunch, attended the Fair Wisconsin Leadership awards, visited with hundreds of people at the Dane County Dairy Breakfast in Waunakee, and of course continued my grassroots campaign efforts.

Each year I volunteer to help with the teacher appreciation lunch that occurs at my children’s public school on the last day of classes. It’s an important time when parents have an opportunity to thank those entrusted with the safety and education of our children. Melissa and I have been fortunate that our children have had amazing teachers who are professional and personable. I’m often asked why I’m running for State office, part of my answer involves enhancing the educational opportunities of Wisconsin children. They deserve the opportunity to succeed and we deserve the security that success will bring. I also believe that it is important to be invested in the success of our public education system. Strong public schools provide both opportunity and security.

Fair Wisconsin, formerly known as Action Wisconsin has led the fight to end discrimination and secure equal rights for all Wisconsinites. I was honored to attend their first annual leadership awards. The presentation reminded me of how far we have come, but also the challenges that remain. Thank you to the presenters for introducing me as the only assembly candidate in attendance. I also want to say a special congratulations to family friend, Norah Cashin, one of the nights leadership award recipients. Her bravery and fight for legal rights have inspired myself and many others.

I firmly believe that Wisconsin should be fair to all of our residents and provide equality and dignity under the law. It is a principle I am dedicated to fighting for.

Recently I woke before the roosters and arrived at the farm to help out at the Annual Dane County Dairy Breakfast. The event was in Waunakee this year and I met hundreds of people from the 81st district. I was surprised that only one other candidate from the 81st briefly stopped by as this was such a great opportunity to meet with farmers and neighbors alike. I had some great discussions about the crisis in healthcare, as it affects farm families from the Town of Burke to Mazomanie. A non-scientific poll of the farms dairy herd, put me as the solid favorite in the race for the 81st.

In fundraising news, the next campaign finance deadline is just a few days away and I need your help today!
