July 21st, 2008

Dear Friends,

Special Welcome to my neighbors in the 81st who have taken the time to complete my legislative survey and have requested to be updated on the campaign and events. I firmly believe that your taking the time to share your thoughts with me will make me a more responsive and effective Representative. I hope to be able to call upon you in the future to share your thoughts and help me to improve our communities and State.

The Details:

I’m proud to announce that I have received the endorsement of the International Painters and Allied Trades District 7 Union. They join other labor organizations and labor leaders in supporting my effort to give voice to the hard working people of the 81st District. I have been impressed with the thoroughness of organized labor as they seek to select the candidate that best reflects the values and concerns of the people in our district. It makes the support that they have given all the more meaningful to me. I was pleased to hear of their interest in supporting a candidate with wide legislative experience and the ability to get things done. This is something I have heard at doors across the district. See my website for my acceptance of the endorsement and for a link to John Nichols' solid analysis of this important endorsement milestone.

I’m also excited that Clean Wisconsin Action Fund has endorsed me. Clean Wisconsin is a leading advocacy group for a healthy, clean environment in our state. As many of you know I’m passionate about safeguarding our environment. One of the things that makes me stand out in a crowded primary is my hands-on experience working to improve Wisconsin’s environment. My passion and experience have garnered me the support of top environmentalists and conservationists in Wisconsin. There is much work to be done on the environmental issues that affect the quality of life here in Wisconsin. Clean Wisconsin knows that I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work on these issues in the Assembly. If you are interested in reading more about the work of Clean Wisconsin, visit: www.cleanwisconsin.org/ If you would like to learn more about the political efforts of Clean Wisconsin Action fund, visit: www.cwactionfund.org Some of my environmental experience includes work on renewable energy sources, legislative efforts to help control exotic invasive species, advocating for renewal of the stewardship fund, and advocating for the passage of the Great Lakes Compact. I was proud to do my part working with some great environmentalists and conservationists on these measures.

Another group that has informally come together to support me is the 81+ Women of the 81st. My wife Melissa was a bit overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and we had to add a plus to the title! The 81+ are hosting a “Meet the Candidate” event for me and they have invited Senator Robson to speak. Senator Robson was the Senate author of the Compassionate Care for Rape Victims Bill and is eager to talk about our successful effort working with Assembly leaders and Planned Parenthood to pass this legislation into law. You should have received an invitation via email.

Issue Statements:

I have completed and posted a number of issue statements on my website. I hope that you will check them out and let me know what you think. It’s hard to cover all of the issues that are important to each of us, but I hope that the sampling I have posted illustrates that I’m thoughtful, experienced, and willing to listen. If there is an issue that is important to you, don’t hesitate to let me know.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Literature Drop – We are preparing for our first big grassroots door-to-door effort. We need your help! Starting July 25th through July 27th (or when done). Call for more details! 220-2342 or email us at sargentforassembly@sbcglobal.net

Parade – Waunafest Parade starts at 11:00 on Sunday morning, July 27th, Team Sargent gathers at 10:30. We'd love for friends, neighbors and supporters to walk with our family. Fun for all! Call to RSVP, 220-2342.

Yard Signs – They are in and starting to go up. We are targeting them for high visibility locations as we ordered only a couple of hundred. If you're in the district and want to assist in getting some signs out, or desperately want one, let Justin know by replying to this email.

Ice Cream Social - More of these are on their way. Would you like to host one? They are fun and easy! Next one is scheduled for August 3rd, from 2-4, in Mazomanie. Details in next week's email post.

Luck:

Last week I mentioned that I had not met an unhappy dog during my door-to-door efforts. As luck would have it, I can now report that I’ve met two dogs that were less happy than most, in fact they were even a tad aggressive. They were not as bad as the hornets’ nest I stirred up in one alcove doorway. How I was not stung is still a mystery. One more piece of (even better) luck was ballot order determination. I will be listed at the top. I hope the placement reminds people that I have worked hard for their vote and will work even harder to carry their values, concerns, and hopes to the State Capitol.

Fundraising:

If you have not done so recently, please take just a few seconds to click the link below to make a secure online donation. $250, $130, $75, or whatever you are comfortable with, to make sure that my grassroots efforts are backed up by sufficient funds to win this important race.

Good old-fashioned checks in the mail are also great! Checks can be written to Justin Sargent for Assembly and mailed to 1638 Mayfield Lane, Madison WI 53704.

I encourage you to think of friends or family that might want to join you in supporting me. Your grassroots fundraising can help to build a winning campaign.

Emails:

I send a semi-weekly update like this out to friends, family, supporters, and all those I meet who share my vision of a better Wisconsin. We all get a ton of emails, so if you don’t want to receive these, please email me and let me know! If you have suggestions on ways to improve these communications, don’t hesitate to contact me. I post an edited version of this email on my website at www.sargentforassembly.org for public viewing.
